Later that evening, after Jessica had left, Elyse was preparing to head into Atlanta for dinner with Uncle Albert when her phone rang.

Elyse picked up the phone without looking at it and assumed he was calling to confirm. She hadn’t seen him since she had the weird magic experiences with the journals, and she had loads of questions for him.

“Elyse Hutchinson?” an unfamiliar voice spoke on the other end. Elyse could hear strange beeping and clicking sounds in the background.

“Yes, who is this?” she said, shifting the bags onto her lap.

“Albert Cornelius was just admitted to the hospital. He is asking for you. Please come soon,” the voice said neutrally.

Gasping, Elyse took in the information. Uncle Albert in the hospital? “Which hospital?” she asked, trying to collect her thoughts. While waiting for a response, she began collecting some items in a bag. A spare set of clothes, a spare toothbrush, and an apple. She wanted to be prepared if she was going to have to stay at the hospital overnight with him.

“Atlanta North Hospital. We’re on—”

“I know where it is,” she said, cutting the nurse off. “I will be there shortly.”

“See you soon,” came the reply. There was a click and the line went dead.

Elyse gathered her bag and rushed out of her house and to the car, the wind gusts plucking at her clothing. Worry flooded her mind. Albert had sounded good on the phone a few hours ago. What had changed?

At her approach her car turned on and began hovering. She quickly slipped inside, setting her bag on the seat next to her. “Take me to Atlanta North Hospital,” she ordered the car.

Leaning back, Elyse closed her eyes as the car effortlessly made its way down the dirt road and onto old Highway 124 to take her to the hospital. Sinking into the seat and trying to prepare herself for what she would learn, Elyse jumped when a feeling of foreboding hit her. “Now what?” she muttered to herself. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself down.

“I must just be worried that he is not going to be okay. The nurse or whoever I spoke to only said to come, not what had happened,” she said quietly to herself.

The car slowed down, and Elyse looked up apprehensively at the large neon sign with Atlanta North Hospital scrawled across it in blue and white letters. The car smoothly glided to a halt at the curb a few feet away from the automatic doors. Elyse pocketed her phone. “Wait nearby,” she told the car, before shutting the door and walking into the hospital.

The bright lights momentarily blinded her as she stepped into the foyer of the hospital. She squinted, tears trickling down her cheeks as she waited for her eyes to adjust. She took one step toward the front desk, where a young man with a bored expression was staring at the counter.

“Excuse me,” she said, trying to get his attention. The young man continued to stare at the counter.
